Companies House is an executive agency of the Department of Trade and Industry. The business of Companies House is the registration and provision of company information for companies registered in England, Wales and Scotland. Their task is
a mammoth one as they process millions of documents every year in order to keep company records up to date.
Much of the information kept is provided online, some free and some you have to pay for. They also distribute a range of useful booklets about the regulatory framework concerning the registration and running of a company plus at their website there are links to all the other government departments that you may wish to contact.
Companies House have two main functions:
- The incorporation, re-registration and striking off of companies and the registration of documents required to be filed under companies, insolvency and related legislation.
- The provision of company information to the public, for which purpose they enforce compliance with statutory requirements.
The following statistics were obtained from Companies House Annual Report 2003/4.
- There are currently 1.84 million live companies recorded at Companies House
- Companies House hold records of a further 2.6 million companies which have now been dissolved.
- The total number of documents processed by Companies House during the year was 6.9 million.
- The total weight of mail received by Companies House was over 219 tonnes
- The number of companies formed during this year increased by 19.2% over the previous year.
- Companies being formed electronically increased by 23%.
- 67% of all companies formed were formed electronically, this figure has now reached 75% as of February 2005.
- The number of telephone calls received at Companies House call centre during the year was 1.65 million.
